TEFL Teacher Profile - Shelly Boyle

TEFL Teacher: Shelly Boyle
Hometown: Co. Waterford (originally USA)
Teaching Location: South Korea

To beat the dreaded economy, former Waterford local, Shelley Boyle, has hopped onto the TEFL bandwagon and is currently teaching children and adults English while living abroad in South Korea.

Shelley found herself in rain-soaked Ireland, Dungarvan, after moving from America to find work abroad. Travelling and living in Ireland gave her the motivation to do more, and now she has surrounded herself with students for the first time, teaching them English as a foreign language for a year, she said.

“As I was signing the (teaching) contracts I was questioning my choice of location and contract length, but I’m very happy to report that I have been pleasantly surprised by South Korea and the entire teaching abroad experience!” Shelley said.

After taking an i-to-i TEFL course, to be trained in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Shelley was in constant contact with John Lee, the South Korea country coordinator, before her and her boyfriend headed over.

“John Lee did a great job of finding a school that suited us…our accommodation is great and exceeded all of my expectations,” Shelley said. “I love the teaching hours and class sizes.”

Shelley’s typical weeks consist of teaching classes between two and 12 students in the evenings, which gives her the whole day to relax, she said.

“It’s really nice because we can enjoy the day before work, especially now that summer has started,” Shelley said.

She has been living in South Korea for five months so far and used her TEFL qualification as a ticket to travel all over Asia and visiting neighbouring countries, she said. Her qualification has enabled her to gain a well-paid salary while also experiencing camel rides on the beach in Dubai, skiing in central Korea, picnicking beneath Cherry blossoms in Tokyo and even relaxing on a wooden Vietnamese boat in Northern Vietnam, she said.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for advice, encouragement and help when I was thinking about teaching in Korea,” Shelley said.
