TEFL Teacher Profiles - Maurice Dixon

An i-to-i TEFL course was Maurice Dixon’s ticket to volunteer travelling throughout India for 2 months. As a prerequisite for a volunteer program, Maurice enrolled in the course to get hands-on training after his volunteer assignment stated that the greatest need was for English teachers, he said.

“The course showed me how much I have yet to learn,” Maurice said. “Having a structure to hang my present knowledge on was good too.”

While Maurice has never worked in a classroom before, he had past experience as an outdoor sports instructor and was able to transfer some of the skills into the classroom environment, he said.

Even without a classroom background, Maurice said he is looking forward to developing a teaching methodology as he goes.

“It’s a new direction for me,” he said, “but it holds a lot of possibilities.”

Maurice said he is looking forward to his new adventure and is preparing for the cultural and lifestyle differences.

“TEFL has opened new opportunities for me, and I am now considering further plans after my initial two months of volunteering,” he said.

When asked what advice he would give to anyone thinking about doing a TEFL course Maurice responded with, “Do it. Just do it!”
