A Guide to Teaching English in Africa
Africa isn’t one of the world’s leading TEFL destinations, but many of its economic and cultural leaders see English skills as key to its development. It is not the place to go if you hope to make buckets of cash, but it does offer the TEFL beginner the opportunity to develop teaching skills in a region where the cost of living is low and the emotional rewards are high.
TEFL Job Hotspots in Africa
We currently have one guide to teaching English in Africa. So until we get the chance to write more guides, South Africa is our top African TEFL destination.
TEFL Jobs in South Africa
While there aren’t that many opportunities to earn money teaching English in South Africa, there are loads of chances to get involved with volunteer teaching. Your best bet for paid work is getting in touch with the British Council in Jo’burg and trying to get private work with businesses in large cities such as Cape Town or Pretoria.
Wages and Cost of Living
As we’ve already mentioned, Africa is not a great choice if you’re hoping to make loads of money from a TEFL job. However, people with a recognised TEFL certificate will always find work and because the cost of living is usually relatively low, you should be able to live quite cheaply. There are also lots of volunteer teaching positions available across the continent.
